Online study rooms with and without a camera

A virtual study room is mostly a way of having other people around while you work. The big design choice is whether they can see you. Each answer gives you something and takes something away.

With a camera: partner sessions and video rooms

The strictest version is a booked session with one partner. Focusmate pairs you with someone for 25, 50 or 75 minutes. You have to keep your video on and stay in frame for the whole session, and if you step away you tell your partner in the chat. The microphone is optional. As of this writing the free plan covers three sessions a week.

The looser version is a large room where everyone studies together with cameras on. StudyStream describes its focus rooms this way in a February 2026 post: cameras on, mics off. An older post from the same company calls the camera a choice, so check the current rules if that matters to you.

What the camera buys you

Mostly, it makes leaving visible. Nobody has to say anything. If your chair is empty, someone can see that, and that small fact is hard to replace. If you only move when someone is checking on you, a camera room is the better tool, and a partner session is the strongest option.

What the camera costs

Jeremy Bailenson at Stanford wrote a 2021 paper on why video calls are tiring. Two of his four arguments carry over to study rooms. One is that you keep seeing your own face, which he compares to an assistant following you around all day with a handheld mirror. The other is that staying inside the camera's frame limits how much you move. The paper is a theoretical argument about video meetings, so it isn't evidence about study rooms in particular.

There are plainer costs too. Your room is on screen, you may feel you should get dressed, and anyone you live with might walk through the shot.

Avatars may help with some of this. In a study of 32 people, the same participants did group tasks on live video and with Memoji avatars, and they reported higher self-esteem and collaboration satisfaction with the avatars. They were groups of people who already knew each other doing short puzzle-style tasks, so it says little about hours of solo study.

Without a camera: videos and avatar rooms

The lightest no camera option is a "study with me" video. A CHI 2021 paper from KAIST analyzed 30 of these videos and interviewed 12 viewers. They used the videos to set up an ambience they liked at low cost, to get a level of peer pressure they could control, and for emotional support. The limit is that it only goes one way. The person on screen doesn't know you're there.

Avatar rooms let you be seen without showing your face. Study at Café lets you enter as a guest and sit in a virtual café with an avatar and a Pomodoro timer. Mogakgong, the site you're on, is a 3D library reading room.

What you give up without a camera

Mainly, no one can tell whether you're really there. We'd rather say this plainly about our own room. While the Mogakgong tab is visible, your timer keeps counting with no input, so you can leave your desk and the number still goes up. You only stand up automatically if you hide the tab for more than 2 minutes. It measures how long you sat, not whether you studied.

A few habits make up some of the difference: write what you're working on in your status, come at the same time each day, and stand up whenever you take a break so the number stays honest.

How to choose

You can also come down in steps. Hide your self-view first, then point the camera at your hands and your book, then turn it off. If the mirror was the problem, the first step may be all you need.

The silent study room on Mogakgong

Mogakgong is a free online study room with no sign-up, no camera, no microphone and no sound. Your character is a cat. Walk to an empty chair and your timer counts up until you stand. Chat is off while you sit, and everyone's name, status and timer float above their heads. There are no stats, rankings or apps. If you come back on the same device before midnight Korea time, today's time carries over, unless the server has restarted.

No camera, no sign-up. Find a seat.
